Diana

This was my first time working with Diana, a model and artist from the Olympia area.  We had a few ideas for this creative shoot, including my experimentation with some side lighting, and using paint to add drama to the images.  The portrait in this set of images is one of my all time favorites.  Diana is very creative and I really enjoyed working with her and would recommend her to anyone seeking a creative and artistic model.

Olympia Salsa by the Fountain

Following close on the heels of the Tango by the Fountain is Salsa by the Fountain.  This event is a little more casual than the Tango event, but equally as fun and ripe for photography opportunities – the movement of the dancers, the changing light as the sun sets, the reflections in the water of the fountain… it’s a fun event and a great photo op!

Olympia Tango by the Fountain

This is an iconic Olympia event that happens every summer.  It’s pretty hard not to walk away with some nice photos of this event, with the location, the subject matter, and the fantastic dancers!

Pike Place Market

One of my customers enjoys photography as much as I do and we will get together for lunch now and then and shoot some photos together.  His office is near the Pike Place Market and we decided to take a casual stroll and do some street photography.  It’s a little hard to “blend in” when you have a DSLR around your neck and a fairly large lens.  Thankfully my Olympus e-3 and Zuiko 12-60 zoom aren’t obnoxiously large.  I was able to capture a lot of the flavor of one of my favorite local places.  As a Seattle native, I know what a “touristy” spot the Market is, but I always enjoy visiting the area and enjoy the hustle and bustle and all of the sensory inputs it provides.

Olympia Harley Davidson

Cars and motorcycles make great subjects for photography!  We were fortunate to have the Olympia HD dealer allow us to have the run of the place and shoot their bikes.  I love the chrome and the details of these machines and there were some really cool bikes there.  This was a group event with the Olympia Camera Club and the Olympia Photographers Meetup Group.  I think I was in a “black and white phase”.  Looking back, I think I might have been better served by shooting in color, but I’m still pretty happy with a lot of these images, especially the ones with a lot of chrome as they make for nice high contrast images.

Nisqually wildlife refuge

These shots were taken on an outing with the Olympia Photographers Meetup Group.  One of our members, John, is a volunteer and offered to show our members around and talk about wildlife photography.  It turned out to be kind of a gray day, so I decided to process all my images in black and white.  It’s a wonderful place to visit and even on a gray day, there’s a lot to see and lots of textures, and of course, the ubiquitous twin barns which are staples of any photographer’s trip to the refuge.

My blog will focus on the "behind the scenes" aspects of photography, my thoughts and beliefs about photography, a chronicle of my shoots, and discussions about equipment and personal projects I'm working on. I hope this becomes an interactive page and look forward to your feedback.
