Beauty shots with Taylor

Taylor was a new model in the Olympia area (she’s since moved out of state) and was great to work with.  My friend Mo of Moxie Glam Makeup (http://www.moxieglam.com) provided the makeup artistry.  These are still some of my favorite beauty shots to this day.  Ladies, if you’re thinking about modeling, or if you’re having portraits done, consider hiring a makeup artist.  A good makeup artist can do wonders for “problem” skin and will make the photographer’s job a lot easier.

Fitness and Beauty

They aren’t mutually exclusive!  I had an opportunity to shoot with Kerri, a fitness model from Seattle.  Kerri has a remarkable weight loss story, she made a remarkable transformation into a fitness competitor.  You can read more on her website:  http://www.kerribfitness.com/.  She’s one of the more inspiring people I’ve met.  We did some shots that showed off her physique, but we also did some nice beauty shots.  It was a lot of fun and I’d definitely recommend her as a model or fitness coach.

Lightroom Black and White Mix

I was trying out my “new” (to me) Sigma 24 MM f1.8 macro lens and when I reviewed the photos I decided to see how they’d look in black and white.  Lightroom provides a lot more control over your black and white conversions than doing a simple black and white conversion in Photoshop, Lightroom, or other image editors.  Adobe Camera RAW in Photoshop provides the same tools.  By adjusting the brightness of each individual slider, you can quickly create dynamic contrasty black and white images.  Here’s a before and after and the settings used.

Olympia Air Show 2011

The Olympia air show is an annual event held at the Olympia Airport.  Some of the highlights are military helicopters, some WWII vintage fighters, and a military fighter jet.  This was the first time I tried to photograph an air show.  It’s not easy!  The planes are moving really fast and the weather wasn’t the best.  I switched back and forth between my Zuiko 50-200 zoom lens and the Sigma 50-500.  The Sigma gave me more zoom range (the equivalent of 1000 MM on a 35 MM camera), but the Zuiko is sharper and gave better image quality.  That’s one of the things about photography, you often have to make compromises.  It was a fun day and I was pretty happy for my first time shooting an air show.

Ocean Shores with Ellie

Ellie is a local model and an avid animal lover.  She has some really cool dogs and a couple of draft horses.  We made plans to do a shoot at Ocean Shores with her dogs and some of her friends.  Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t very cooperative that day.  It was cold, windy, and sprinkling throughout the day.  Ellie and her friends were troopers and made the best of the weather conditions.  My camera gear is weather sealed, so no worries about damage from the moisture.  Instead of the typical sunny beach shots, I decided to make the entire set black and white to reflect the mood of the day.  It turned out to be a really fun day, in large part due to Ellie’s unquenchable spirit and exuberance.

Paper Doll Princess

Courtney is a well published model from California.  She is the epitome of professionalism and very beautiful.  We had a great shoot and shot a number of looks.  She can do fashion, glamor, art and more, but we focused mainly on artistic shots.

Jessi June

Jessi is a professional published model and I had the good fortune to shoot with her while she was in the Northwest.  She’s a beautiful model with a voluptuous figure and my main goal was to create lighting that would accentuate her best features.  In order to do this, I used a large gridded light source to create a lot of shadows, but with fairly smooth transitions from light to dark.  I placed the light to the side to accentuate the shadows and keep the light off the backdrop.

Goldie Godiva – Fashion Shoot

It’s always an adventure (in the best sense of the word!) when my friend Goldie has a new idea for a shoot. For this session, she had a number of themes that we shot, and I think most of them came out very well. She is one of the most creative and fun models I know and we always have fun shooting together.
